AEK Athens and thousands of fans were wildly enthusiastic about AEK earning their first Greek championship title. The team last won a title 24 years ago, with this compelling victory, AEK Athens and their fans celebrated with a parade from Rizoupoli stadium to the under-construction AEK stadium in Nea Philadelphia.
The “yellow and black” completed the Super League 2017-2018 season with a 1-0 win against Apollo Smyrna in Rizoupoli. After the game, Super League President Giorgos Stratos handed team captain Petros Mandalos the cherished Championship Cup. After that, a shower of yellow and black confetti rained down on the players and crew as they boarded the open top bus that took them to Nea Philadelphia with thousands of fans following and chanting the AEK anthem.
The coach crossed streets full of people and stopped outside the much-anticipated, under-construction AEK stadium where more New Philadelphia residents and AEK fans joined the party.
“It was vindication. We will win many championships in the new stadium,” AEK major shareholder Yiannis Melissanidis told reporters.
The crowd was ecstatic, chanting the AEK anthem and praising in singsong the players and coach Manolo Jimenez. Slogans against PAOK were also chanted, as AEK will meet the Thessaloniki team on Saturday for the Greek Cup Final.
