Riot police and protesters clashed near the official residence of Greece’s prime minister on Friday, as a demonstration over education turned violent.
Police fired tear gas as some of the crowd, masked and brandishing sticks, attacked officers.
The day had started peacefully, with the protest by education-sector workers making its way through the center of the Greek capital.
However, a minority element later engaged with police, attempting to overturn an armoured van used for transporting the riot squad.
After firing tear gas, the crowd broke up.
