Newborn Found Strangled to Death in Trash Container in Athens

The dead infant that was found in a trash container by a vagrant on Monday morning in Petroupolis, Athens, had actually been strangled, according to the coroner’s report.

The coroner’s examination determined that the cause of death of the newborn had been strangulation with the umbilical cord and rope just a few hours before the body was discovered.

A vagrant man who was searching for food in the garbage containers of the Athens suburb discovered the infant at 11 am on Monday and notified the police. The baby was wrapped in a bed sheet.

Initially, the causes of death were unknown, as area residents who saw the body said the baby’s mouth was full of napkins. The initial forensic examination showed that the napkins were up to the infant’s pharynx.

Hellenic Police is conducting an investigation to locate those responsible.
