Poll: 59% of Greeks Oppose “Macedonia” in FYROM Name

Six out of ten Greeks oppose the use of the word “Macedonia” in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia name, while 35 percent would not mind a composite name that includes “Macedonia”, a new poll shows.

According to the poll conducted by Pulse on behalf of Action 24 television station, 59 percent of Greeks disagree with the use of the word “Macedonia” in the Balkan country’s name. At the same time, 65 percent of respondents view positively the protest rallies for the name of FYROM.

Also, the majority of SYRIZA voters (57 percent) also believe that it is good to have these rallies. In addition, 72 percent believe that the FYROM name issue is important or very important for Greece.

When asked which political leader is more suitable to solve the FYROM name issue, 32 percent showed greater confidence in New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis and 24 percent said that Alexis Tsipras is more suited for the task.

New Democracy leads poll with double-digit difference

In questions regarding a possible election in the near future. Pulse respondents put New Democracy ahead of others with 29 percent of the total vote. SYRIZA follows 10 points behind at 19 percent.

Movement for Change, the new party composed of PASOK, To Potami and DEMAR came third with 8 percent of the total vote. Golden Dawn is right behind with 7.5 percent and the Greek Communist Party (KKE) is next 5 percent.

The remaining parties did not get the three percentage points needed to enter the House. Specifically, the Centrists Union and Independent Greeks received only 1.5 percent of voters’ preference. Popular Unity, ANTARSYA, Plefsi Eleftherias and the Greek Solution fell below 1.5 percent.

As for the remaining, 2.5 percent of participants said they would vote for another party, the undecided were 8 percent, 4 percent of respondents said “I Don’t Know/I Can’t Answer, 4 percent said they would cast a blank ballot, while 6 percent said they would not go to vote.

ND chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis is ahead of Alexis Tsipras as more suitable for prime minister with 32 percent  against 24 percent of the incumbent, while 41 percent responded “neither one”.

Finally, on the question “Who is going to win the election,” 59 percent said it will be the conservative party and 23 percent said SYRIZA.
