‘UNSG report refutes those who say negotiations over’

“The UN Secretary general’s draft refutes those who claimed that negotiations are over,” Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said on Sunday, “there is interest and we expect the negotiations to resume.”

It also confirms President Nicos Anastasiades’ approach that preparation is needed, he added.

The need for preparations is underlined by the Secretary General himself with his plan to send an envoy to the area to assess the possibility of continuing negotiations, Prodromou said.

Prodromou also said the Guterres Framework outlines a specific agenda which the negotiations should be based on and for the first time in the history of the Cyprus problem puts the issue of security at the epicentre of an agreement, with the abolition of guarantees and the withdrawal of Turkish troops.

“What President Anastasiades and Greece managed in Crans Montana will continue in the negotiations which must show that Turkey has taken the decision to allow a deal to be reached between Cypriots, without it getting involved in Cypriot events,” he continued.

Called to comment on criticism from Akel and other parties over an advance version of the UNSG’s report, Prodromou said “the government can handle shots fired by internal politics. The issue though is in a confrontation with Turkey Cyprus comes out a winner.”

“The request is to follow negotiations that confront the heart of the problem, which is the invasion, occupation and involvement of Turkey. It is in this direction we must concentrate our efforts,” he said.
