Cypriot crew move into rally first place

Share this:

A Skoda Fabia R5 driven by Simos Galatariotis and Antonis Ioannou have taken first place after the first four stages of the Cyprus Rally on Sunday.

They are the fourth pair to have taken the lead during the rally, underlining its turbulent nature and its tough level of difficulty.

The fast time of the Cyprus crew allowed them to jump on the mistakes of an overtake overnight leader Juuso Nordgren who overturned his Skoda Fabia R5 on the first turn of the special stage meaning he fell into fourth place. As a result of the accident the 11th special stage was cancelled for timing issues.

His car hit one belonging to a member of the public. There were no casualties and an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances.

Second place in the rankings was taken by brothers Bruno and Hugo Magalhaes boosting their hopes to take the European Rally Championship.

In third place are Nasser Al Attiyah and Matthieu Baumell in a Ford Fiesta R5 after starting the day in fourth but were cutting the lead of other drivers.

Three special stages remain until the winner is announced at 6.30 on Sunday evening.
